Our British Heritage

The Prototal UK story began in 1999 in Newbury, when 3T RPD Ltd was founded by Sir Peter Michael, Dr. Hans Langer, and The Greenham Common Trust. Originally established to showcase EOS technologies to the UK market, the company was based on the historic Greenham Common Business Park, a former Cold War US Air Base. This heritage of technical excellence continues to drive our innovation today.

From its inception, the company drove the evolution of Additive Manufacturing (AM) in the UK. As the earliest adopter of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology in the region, the original team of seven multi-skilled pioneers provided the foundation for the high-tech 3D printing services we offer today. By 2001, growing demand led the company to triple its AM capacity to meet the needs of the British market.

In 2004, a strategic turning point was reached as the company shut down its traditional injection moulding and rapid tooling capacity to focus entirely on AM technologies. This shift allowed for a specialized focus on high-quality manufacturing ready for serial production. By 2007, the establishment of a dedicated Metals division made the company the only service provider in the UK capable of delivering both polymer and metal AM components.

Between 2007 and 2018, consistent performance and rising demand, particularly from the UK Motorsport industry, fueled massive expansion. By 2019, the company had amassed the largest AM capacity in the UK, boasting 14 metal (DMLS) and 7 polymer systems, supported by a team that had grown to nearly 120 dedicated professionals.

Following a strategic restructure and the creation of 3T AMPolymers in 2020 to focus on the booming polymer sector, the business prepared for its next major chapter. The integration into the Prototal Group marked a milestone in this expansion, bringing the UK’s most experienced 3D printing teams into the Group to spearhead growth across the region.

To align with our growing capabilities, our brand has evolved from 3T RPD to 3T Additive Manufacturing, and finally into its current form. Today, as Prototal UK, we combine the deep-rooted heritage of our Newbury origins with the expansive resources of a European leader. We remain committed to the pioneering spirit established in 1999, delivering state-of-the-art manufacturing solutions to our partners across the UK.

At Prototal UK, precision is a mandate, not an option. Our facilities in Newbury operate under a comprehensive framework of industrial and security certifications designed for the world’s most demanding supply chains. Our baseline is established by ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), but for our elite partners, we go much further:

  • Aerospace & Defense: We are certified to AS/EN 9100, the gold standard for aviation, space, and defense organizations. This ensures total traceability and the rigorous risk management required for flight-ready and mission-critical hardware.
  • Medical Technology: Our ISO 13485 certification governs the production of medical devices, ensuring that our additive processes meet the stringent safety and regulatory requirements of the healthcare sector.
  • Defense Accreditation: We are JOSCAR registered—the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register used by the UK Ministry of Defence. This pre-qualification proves we are “fit for business” in the most secure environments.
  • Digital Security: In the era of digital manufacturing, protecting your IP is paramount. We hold the UK Government-backed Cyber Essentials certification, ensuring our technical infrastructure is guarded against cyber threats and your CAD data remains secure.

Whether you are competing in Motorsport Valley or fulfilling a strategic defense contract, our Stirling and Newbury hubs provide the documented integrity and “zero-fail” assurance your project demands.

For our serial production partners who require the highest level of documentation and risk mitigation, we offer PPAP (Production Part Approval Process). This ensures that every component is manufactured to your exact specifications through a validated and repeatable process.

Through our British facilities, you have full access to our global manufacturing ecosystem. we can provide every material and technology listed in our Industrial 3D Printing section, backed by our network of 130+ systems across Europe.

However, for projects requiring maximum agility and our 2-day lead time, we maintain a specialised local 3D Printing fleet in Newbury & Stirling:

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering): The industrial standard for robust, functional parts and complex geometries without the need for support structures.

  • PA 2200
  • PA 3200 GF
  • PA 2241 FR
  • PA 603-CF
